When a child misbehaves,
we usually see only two options.

Either fight it strongly,
or ignore it and give up.

But maybe
there is a 3rd option?

In this week’s Torah portion,
we learn about the limits and distances we’re allowed to walk on Shabbat.

It says:
“No one should leave their place.”

Our sages explain:
You can walk a limited distance - around a half a mile - from the last house of the city.

If you need to go further,
you need to make an eruv.

What is the concept of Eruv?

You place food at the end of a half a mile, before Shabbat. Then that distance becomes your property and you are able to continue your journey.

If walking far on Shabbat is forbidden, how does the eruv help?

Eruv means connection.
Two places become one.

What was outside is brought inside.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson explains:

Inside the boundary is holiness.
Outside represents distance from G-D.

In Kabbalah:
Kindness represents inside, severity outside.

Balance is beauty —
connecting both sides.

Now back to the 3rd option

When a child goes “out of bounds”,

Our role is not only to stop him,
or to just give in

Sometimes we must be there with them.

Even in places we don’t want to go.

That is the power of balance.

Life is not black and white.

Not only kindness,
and not only strength.

Chassidus teaches us
the third option.

Sometimes it’s uncomfortable,
but it builds the future.

“I am with him in pain.”

Not taking him out
but being with him.

Presence is the beginning of rescue.

And  perhaps it’s already the redemption.
